The Swimmer (1968) – 95 minutes

Say goodbye to summer parties with this film based on the famous John Cheever story of the same name. Burt Lancaster stars in this portrayal of fading WASP social life as he jumps from one neighbor’s pool party to another pool party, ‘swimming’ his whole town.  It is an affecting examination of changing social mores and cultures; those which preserve and those which don’t.

Wednesday, September 9th at 6pm

Three (1969) – 105 minutes

Say goodbye to summer vacation travels with this portrayal of two American college friends (played by Sam Waterson and Robie Porter) spending their summer driving around Italy and France in an old Puegeot. They soon finds themselves rivals for the attentions of a mysterious woman (played by Charlotte Rampling). A fascinating look at how an architectural and cultural environment can affect emotional outlooks, this is the only film directed by the great and recently deceased novelist James Salter.

Thursday, September 10th at 6pm

Land of the Pharaohs (1955) – 106 minutes

Say goodbye to summer blockbuster fun with this Sword and Sandal throwback.  The only major film of its period to give importance to the characters of the architect and builders, this tells the tale of a captured architect who designs an ingenious plan to ensure the impregnability of tomb of a self-absorbed Pharaoh, obsessed with the security of his next life. It stars Joan Collins, Jack Hawkins and James Robertson Justice with a script written in part by William Faulkner.

The Foundation’s President Alexander C. Ives will present a short introduction, linking the films with the causes and work of the Preservation Foundation.
